We know from lived experience, and decades of research and data, that our legal system is unequal. The uncomfortable truth is that lawyers—alongside the police and courts—are part of a legal system tasked with enforcing a social, political and economic order that does not value Black lives. These systems exclude Black lives from access to housing, employment, financial resources, institutions of higher education, and public accommodations at the same time that Black lives are over-represented in the criminal justice system in the form of mass incarceration. This institutional racism perpetuates the ongoing social and racial inequality that has gone largely unchecked for generations.

Our Firm rejects this social, political and economic order and the role that the legal system plays in maintaining it. Through our work representing working people and their unions we strive to achieve just outcomes for workers and their families. The Firm was founded on the principle that working people are entitled to the best legal representation in an economy and social system that was not designed with them in mind. But we recognize the difficulty in achieving just outcomes when those outcomes are consistently undermined by the widespread existence of racial inequality and white supremacy. The ability of labor institutions to improve the lives of working people is directly related to labor’s ability to show solidarity and serious commitment to the struggles and lived realities of victimized communities.

Since 1974, the attorneys who make up this Firm have sought to manifest their commitment to social, economic and racial justice by their words and actions. With these truths heavy in our minds, our Firm recommits itself to do what we can internally and externally both through words and action to attain racial justice.
